Society and environment

The energy transition is changing how we use energy in our daily lives, work, and travel. This raises questions about affordability, environmental impact, and public support. How can we ensure that everyone participates and that the energy transition is fair? Discover how we work together to create solutions and a future-proof energy supply.

Energy affordability

For some households, energy costs are a heavy burden. According to Statistics Netherlands, 4.8% of households are affected by energy poverty, which can lead to financial stress and health problems. Eneco is committed to reducing energy poverty and keeping energy affordable for everyone. Read here what energy poverty means and what initiatives and schemes are available.

What we’re doing to fight energy poverty

At Eneco, we remain committed to a sustainable and inclusive energy transition. By working closely with local governments, we aim to tackle energy poverty and debt problems together. Some concrete steps we have taken:
Social debt collection Eneco collects social debt by reaching out early, considering payment arrangements, and helping with energy assistance or debt counseling. Eneco has also earned the Warm Debt Collection quality mark, demonstrating commitment to reducing employee and customer debt.
Energy Emergency Fund The Energy Emergency Fund is a temporary fund to help low-income households pay energy bills and avoid financial problems due to rising prices. Eneco is an initiator and contributor.
GeldfitThrough Geldfit, Eneco supports households in tackling (potential) debts, for example with online tips, an energy coach, or advice about available financial assistance. Through Geldfit.nl, Eneco also helps connect customers with (potential) debts to local government support.
Energy Regulator The Energy Regulator is a service portal for administrators and debt counselors to easily arrange matters with Eneco and our brands for their clients in one place.

What we do

Since 2015, we have set out our sustainability goals in our One Planet Plan. The plan contains measurable objectives in the areas of climate, biodiversity, circularity, and society. These goals are inextricably linked to our business strategy and plan. Strategic choices and investment decisions are tested against the One Planet goals.

We want everyone to be able to live and work more sustainable, something we can only achieve together with our partners, customers, and suppliers. The energy transition is for all of us.

Community engagement

The energy transition is a shared challenge, especially in the Netherlands where there is limited space for new sustainable energy sources. That is why it is important to actively involve residents and local people in the development of these projects. Doubts, questions or concerns deserve attention, to ensure the energy transition is not only sustainable but also widely supported. How can we combine sustainable energy generation within our living environment? Read more about our approach.

Involving the community

Only by working with the community can we develop new renewable energy projects. By engaging all stakeholders from the outset, we discover new possibilities and opportunities together.

Projects

Eneco involves stakeholders from the beginning of a project through conversations, meetings, and advisory groups to hear ideas, questions and concerns.

Local funds

With the development of onshore wind and solar farms in the Netherlands, local funds are made available in consultation with the local community—often in the form of an environmental fund, which can help finance other local sustainable or social projects. This way, the local community benefits from the new park.
